John Peter Wallin [Waleen] was born in Sweden and immigrated with his wife Caroline [Nilson/Nilsdotter] to America in 1884. When they got to America, their last names changed to Waleen/Wallin.
John's son, Charles, was the first to come and change his last name. The rest of the family followed. John's previous last name was Johannisson. The Swedish custom for last names at the time was for the child to take the father's first name and then add son or dotter. That didn't work well in America so a lot of Swedish immigrants changed their last name. No reason as to why Waleen was chosen though.
