He and his older two brothers were born to Catherine and James Kirkland in Scotland. After coming to Utah Catherine Norman Kirkland later married Samuel Ward, a widower with several children of his own. Henry was quite young at the time of this marriage. Henry was the only one to take/use the Ward name.
