Freeman Wallace ‘Shorty' (in Hiawatha was known as Runt) Bartley, 84, of Topeka, died Monday afternoon, August 10, 2009, at Stormont-Vail Hospital in Topeka.
He was born February 15, 1925, at Hiawatha, one of eleven children of Glenn and Grace Mize Bartley. He grew up at Hiawatha where he attended schools, prior to graduating from Hiawatha High School.
Freeman served with the U.S. Army during World War II in the Central Pacific, discharged at the rank of private first class. After returning from the War, Freeman lived at Topeka and worked as a nursing assistant at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Topeka for 32 years, before retiring.
In the summer months, he also raised and sold vegetables, and enjoyed fishing. Mr. Bartley was a member of Capital Post #1, Topeka American Legion.
Survivors include his companion of 23 years, Helen Moore of the home; two brothers: Francis Bartley, Horace "Bill" Bartley, both of Topeka; a sister Sylvia Bartley of Hiawatha; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Shorty was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters LaVeta Bartley, Maxine Fleener; five brothers: Gilbert, Kenneth, Dayton, Ray, and Clinton Bartley.
The family will meet with friends from 1 until 2 p.m. Friday, August 14, at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Hiawatha, to go in procession to Mt. Hope Cemetery, Hiawatha for graveside services and military honors at 2 p.m. Rev. Francis Bartley, Jr., will officiate.
Memorial services are planned for 7 p.m. Friday evening, at Wanamaker Woods Church of the Nazarene, 3501 SW Wanamaker, Topeka. Memorial contributions are suggested to Capital American Legion Post #1 in Topeka which may be sent in care of the funeral home, 124 S 7th St., Hiawatha 66434.
