The son of Peter & Christiana Jane (Page) Lyter, in 1850, he was a blacksmith living in Halifax, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. He married Sarah A. Hoover and fathered Ellen (b. @1852), Thomas L. (b. @1856), Franklin W. (b. @1860), Harvey F. (b. @1868), and Rodey W. (b. @1873). In 1860, he was still a blacksmith but living in Upper Swatara Township, Dauphin County.

A Civil War veteran, he was drafted in Harrisburg October 29, 1862, mustered into federal service there November 2 as a sergeant with Co. C, 177th Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia"), and honorably discharged with his company August 5, 1863. He also enlisted and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg February 18, 1865, as 2nd lieutenant of Co. C, 192nd Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company August 24, 1865, at Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. (Courtesy Dennis Brandt)
