He was born on Aug. 13, 1930, at Liberty, Mo., to Milbert August and Georgia (Linderholm) Meier. He moved with his family east of Parsons where they farmed. John attended country schools and Parsons High School, graduating in 1948.
He married Norma E. Morris on Nov. 18, 1950, at Washington Avenue Methodist Parsonage in Parsons. She preceded him in death on Sept. 5, 2008.
He served in the United States Air Force and was stationed in San Antonio. Following his discharge he returned to Parsons where he worked for Kansas Claims as an insurance adjuster and farmed east of Parsons. He later started Mid-States Adjustment Inc., which he owned and operated for many years. He retired in 2000.
He was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church and the National Association of Insurance Adjusters. He held several offices in the association, including president. He enjoyed working on his farm, going to his children's and grandchildren's activities, playing pinochle, dancing and traveling.
Survivors include a son, Alan Meier and his wife, Barbara, of Dennis; three daughters, Carol Stevenson and her husband, Todd, of Guernsey, Wyo., Kim Halula and her husband, Matt, of Topeka, and Kerri Stevens and her husband, Zach, of Cherryvale; six grandchildren, August "Auggie" Meier and his wife, Michehle, Amber (Meier) Gutschke, Brant Williams and his wife, Kristen, Malinda Hersey and her husband, Chaz, Chandler Stevenson and Logan Stevenson; eight great-grandchildren, Carleigh Meier, Shelby Meier, Aubrey Meier, Caleb Gutschke, Urcer Mac Heiskell, Sydney Heiskell, Pryce Williams and Raef Williams; a brother, Leonard Meier of San Diego, Calif.; a sister, Dorothy Perez and her husband, Manuel, of Parsons; several nieces and nephews; and longtime best friends, Russell Barnes and Bonnie McMillan.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by two daughters, Vicki Lynn Meier and Glenda Kay (Meier) Williams.
The service will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Wesley United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in the Memorial Lawn Cemetery with military honors conducted by the Brown-Bishop Post No. 704, Veterans of Foreign Wars. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at the Carson-Wall Funeral Home.
