Gary triumphantly entered heaven on August 8, 2009 after 44 rewarding years. A visitation will be held this evening from 6 to 8 p.m and a celebration of his life will be at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, August 12, 2009, both at First Assembly of God in Lubbock.

Gary was born on December 15, 1964 in Lubbock. He graduated from Texas Tech University and Wayland Baptist University with a Master's degree. He taught science at Hutchinson Junior High and AP Biology at Monterey High School, as well as coaching Academic Decathlon for many years. Prior to his death, he served as the Science Coordinator for LISD. Learning and teaching were his lifelong passions. Gary's life was one of service to the people in Lubbock. Some of his last words were, "Lubbock, I love you."

Gary cherished the people of First Assembly of God, where he served as Minister of Education. He loved the Lord with all his heart. Today he is in the presence of his wonderful Savior.

Gary is survived by his beloved wife of 21 years, Julie Unwin Fortenberry; and two daughters, Kelsei and Kaitlyn. He is also survived by his mother, Doris Fortenberry; brother, Joel Fortenberry and wife Becki of Houston; and sister, Darlene Harvey and husband Carrel of Lubbock. He was preceded in death by his father, Texas Fortenberry.

Gary will be laid to rest in the City of Lubbock Cemetery
