Soren Andrew Jessen, the son of Nis and Minnie Johnson Jessen, was born October 10, 1908 at his parents' home in Exira, Iowa and died September 2, 2004, at the Extra Care Center in Extra, at the age of 95 years, 10 months, and 22 days.
Soren was baptized and confirmed at the Extra Lutheran Church. He attended school near Extra, then helped operate the family farm.
On December 11, 1935 he was united in marriage to Anna Mae Jean Winterstein in Maryville, Missouri. They lived near Adair, IA, where Soren was employed at the COOP for a short time. They moved northeast of Extra where they operated the family farm, which they later purchased. They farmed until 1968 when they retired and moved into Extra. During retirement Soren was employed part-time at the Grocery Store in Extra for several years. Soren cared for Mae Jean at home until she moved to the Extra Care Center in 1987. Soren lived in their home until he moved into the Extra Care Center in March of 1998. Mae Jean died December 30, 2001.
Soren was a life long member of the Extra Lutheran Church. he enjoyed being with his family and friends and enjoyed playing cards.
Funeral Services for Soren Andrew Jessen, 95, were conducted on September 7, at the Exira Lutheran Church in Exira with Pator Bill Embree officiating. Interment was in the St. John's Lutheran Cemetery west of Exira. Casket bearers were: Scott Small, Travis Small, Kevin Jessen, Keith Jessen, Michael Jessen, Andrew Jessen, Thomas Jessen & Peter Jessen.
