A Civil War veteran, he was drafted in Harrisburg October 29, 1862, mustered into federal service there November 3 as a private with Co. C, 177th Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia"), and honorably discharged with his company August 5, 1863. He also enlisted and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg February 4, 1864, as a private with Co. B, 20th Pennsylvania Cavalry (181st Pa). On June 17, 1865, as part of a war-end consolidation, he transferred to Co. B, 1st Pennsylvania Provisional Cavalry, and honorably discharged with his company July 13, 1865.
He married Elizabeth A. unk. sometime during or before 1870, but they apparently had no children. He became a minister after the war but is in the Harrisburg city directory as a plasterer. In 1890, he was living in Spring Garden Township, York County, which appears to have been a temporary residence.
