REUBEN BUSHNELL, the son of Ebenezer and Dorothy (Ingham) Bushnell, was born 2 Feb 1741. He married Martha Jones, daughter of Daniel and Hannah (Stannard) Jones, in 1770 in Westbrook, Middlesex, CT. On 17 Nov 1772, they owned the covenant in the 3rd Congregational Church at Westbrook, Connecticut. Reuben and Martha had eight children: Clarissa who married John Chapman; Reuben who married Elizabeth Chapman; infant d. 1775; Martha; Stephen who married Vincie Tuttle; Calvin who married Polly Williams; Maria and Elirda who married Anna Demons.

Reuben was a soldier in the American Revolutionary War, 1781-1783 and received a bounty from the town of Saybrook for his service. He was captured by the British during General Benedict Arnold's attack on New London, Connecticut, 6 Sep 1781 and carried off as a prisoner. His family in 1790, as shown in the census, was 2 males over 16, 1 male under 16, and 4 females. In the distribution of his estate in 1803, there is mentioned, sons: Reuben, Stephen, Calvin and Elirda, and daughters: Clara, Marta and Maria.
