Mary Frances (Tancy) Orr had many responsibilities as the oldest of nine children. Because she was 16 when her father (James Paul Orr) died in 1922, she stayed in Mount Vernon, Missouri, living with her Aunt Bess (Orr) Phillips when she went to high school. Tancy attended normal school and then taught in a one-room schoolhouse. She later obtained a Master's degree in education.

She met her husband Ed Schnake because he boarded down the street from the Orr family in Mount Vernon. Her mother (Jessie Cochran Orr) did not initially like Ed, so Tancy and he went to Wheaton, MO and eloped. Jettie later grew very fond of him. Tancy and Ed farmed in Stotts City, MO, and this was the gathering place for the children and grandchildren of Jim and Jettie Orr. Though her only child (James Henry) died the day he was born, she nurtured many children.

She and Ed moved "into town" (Mount Vernon) when they were older. For many years she was the keeper of the family tree for the Orr Reunion Association, which met each summer in Mount Vernon. Tancy contracted Alzheimer's disease and was known to drive through Mount Vernon with minimal regard for stop signs and such.
