John was born April 1929 in Hagerman, New Mexico, and grew up in Arizona. He married Bessie Carpenter in the Arizona Temple on December 28, 1950. They lived in Chandler, Arizona, when they were first married. John, with his brother Randall, and their father, had several business adventures: farming, registered dairy and show herd, apartment buildings, Goodyear car and home store, and Richfield service station. They did their own maintenance work on the ranch machinery.

In 1955 they moved to Bullhead City, Arizona, and attended Church meetings in Kingman, Arizona, and Later in Needles, California. In 1962 they moved to Challis, Idaho, and went into the ranching business. To consolidate the ranches of the family members, they moved to Dillon, Montana, in 1966. There they acquired a larger ranching operation, raising and selling grain, hay, and livestock. Now John and his sons run the ranch. John purchased interests in three businesses in Dillon.

John was active in Church positions. John served as the ward clerk and Young Men secretary. John was musically inclined, played the cornet and had a good tenor/bass voice.
