NILES - Amy Jean Fletcher, 85, formerly of Pucker Street Drive, died at 12:25 a.m. Monday, August 3rd, in Saint Francis Hospital, Beech Grove, IN, following an extended illness. She was born on May 26, 1924, in South Bend, IN, to Will and Gertrude (Tolnaar) Thomas, and had lived in Niles most of her life, attending Niles schools. She had lived in Indianapolis for the past several years.
Mrs. Fletcher was employed for 17 years in the food service department of Niles Community Schools. She also served as the cook at Michiana Christian Service Camp for many years. She was a charter member of Fairland Christian Church, Niles, where she also taught Sunday school. She was an avid player of bingo, but her greatest priority was caring for her family, and is well-remembered for her support and participation in the activities of her children when they were young and at home.
On January 5, 1942, in Napoleon, Ohio, she married Gemroe Fletcher, who preceded her in death on August 9, 1993. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Delores Jean Fletcher in 1968, and by her brothers, Harold, Walter and Ralph Thomas, and a sister, Nida Baxter.
Surviving family includes her children, Gemroe Ronald (Judy) Fletcher of Spokane, WA, Karen (Jim) Ladd Custer of Greenwood, IN, George (Dora) Fletcher of Mishawaka, IN, Ken (Stephanie) Fletcher of Lawrence, MI, and Paul (Analise) Fletcher of New Whiteland, IN; 17 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandson.
The funeral services for Amy Jean Fletcher will be at 11 a.m. Friday, August 7, in the Fairland Christian Church, Niles, with Mr. Don Fleischman of the church and Mr. Ed Erskin of Northway Church of Christ, South Bend, officiating. Committal will follow at Silverbrook Cemetery, Niles. The family will receive relatives and friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday in the Halbritter Funeral Home, Niles. Contributions in memory of Amy Jean Fletcher may be made to the Michigan Christian Service Camp, or to Great Lakes Christian College, 6211 W. Willow Hwy., Lansing, MI 48917. "We loved our mother, and celebrate her homegoing to heaven and reunion with our father. We look forward to the day that we shall join them."
