Mary Alice McDaniel, 81, died Aug. 24, 2003, of congestive heart failure at her home in Weir.

Mrs. McDaniel was a lifelong resident of Choctaw County, where she worked and raised a family with the late Carlee McDaniel. She was employed for many years at the Weir public school cafeteria and at Endicott Johnson shoe factory in Ackerman. She later owned and managed the Town and County Restaurant.

Mrs. McDaniel's greatest joy was her family, and despite the tragic loss of four of her eight adult children in recent years, she remained strongly optimistic about life. Her determination to persevere through the bad times and to fully enjoy the good times will always be an inspiration to the many friends and family members who knew and loved her.

Survivors include two sons, Donnie and wife Helen of Kilmichael, and Larry and wife Linda of French Camp; two daughters, Glenda and husband Webb O'Bryant of Ackerman, and Yvonne and husband Hurchell Stevens of French Camp; her daughters-in-law, Faye McDaniel of Brandon and Frances McDaniel of Weir; two sisters, Christine Dunks of Houston, Texas, and Peggy Sanchez of Pascagoula; and her sister-in-law, Eldee Herod of Glenmore, La., along with 22 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by sons Melton, David, Nicky and Rainey McDaniel.

Services were Aug. 27 at Mt. Moriah Baptist Church, on what would have been her 82nd birthday, with the Rev. Ralph Rogers officiating.

Coleman Funeral Home of Ackerman was in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be made to Mt. Moriah Baptist Church, Mt. Moriah Cemetery Fund or Gideons International.
