"In the spring of 1852 Irvin left Indiana for Iowa. He rode a little brown pony and carried $1800 in gold in the saddle bags. His wife never expected to see him again as indians and robbers were plentiful. He came to Winterset and bought land about 2 1/2 miles southwest of the town, a farm of about 100 acres for each of his six children and one for himself paying $1.50 per acre. He then returned to Indiana and moved his family out in the fall of the same year."
From report of 1922 Gordon Family Reunion
Later in 1852, the Church of Christ was organized at Winterset when "brother Irvin Gordon was the minister who gathered about him a few Disciples and guided them on the day of their organization."
Centennial brochure.
