Melvin R. Hoffman, age 86, of Leawood, KS, passed away on July 26, 2009.

Mel grew up the oldest of 4 children in Kansas City, KS. He attended Wyandotte High School, graduating in the class of 1940, and received a Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from Kansas State University.

In December of 1942, he married Bettie Haberlein. They remained devoted to each other for 66 years.

During WWII, Mel served in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. In early 1945, he landed at the Bishi River in Northern Okinawa and fought with the 1497th Army Engineers south to Naha Harbor. There at age 23, he helped oversee construction of a huge seawall he and another young engineer designed in preparation for the invasion of Japan.

Mel and Bettie raised a family in Prairie Village, KS, later moving to Leawood. He worked as a civil engineer designing bridges until his retirement.

Survivors include his wife Bettie; sisters Elaine Mather, Carolyn Woerz, and Nadyne Klempnaur; sons Alan and wife Cindy, and Frank and wife Sandy; and grandchildren Cole Hoffman, Alain O'Tool, and Logan Smith.

Mel Hoffman was preceded in death by his father, Richard Hoffman, and mother, Bernice Walthall Hoffman.
