CALEB 13th child of Francis and Onner (Prince) Loud

Caleb Loud was born and reared in Weymouth, Massachusetts. Although a seafaring man and a noted swimmer, he was drowned while bathing near his own house at the age of 35 years. He was buried in his native town of Weymouth in the Old North Burial ground of North Weymouth, close by his parents. His grave has a stone marker which is about six feet from the grave of his parents. Caleb was a Housewright.

His wife, Susannah Bates, was born in Weymouth, daughter of Abraham and Sarah (Tower) Bates.

After Caleb Loud's death, Susannah lived in Weymouth with the children until the spring of 1783. Susannah was appointed administratrix, Oct. 22, 1782 (see Suffolk County Probate, number 81: 606, 631). Her brother Lebbeus Bates, was appointed guardian to Caleb, Susannah, Charles, John and Oliver, children of the late Caleb Loud, of Weymouth, Apr. 22, 1783 (see Suffolk Probate, 82:365). At that time, her brother, Lebbeus Bates, was living in Cummington, Ma. and it was at that time, or about, in May of 1783 that Susannah and the children moved to Cummington. The earliest record there shows that Susannah Loud filed intentions of marriage to Lt. William Hayden in Windsor, Ma., Dec. 18, 1785. Windsor is about 8 miles west of Cummington. For some reason, the marriage never took place. The records of Cummington show Susannah Loud, the widow, and her daughter, Susannah Loud, 2nd were living there from 1785 until the spring of 1795. About that time, or 1796, she moved to New York State. She was living at Hunter, Greene County, N.Y. Feb. 20, 1819. At that time, her daughter was unmarried and she was still a widow. Mrs. Loud's grandson, Dr. Watson Loud, says: "I have a copy of a letter written by her, dated Hunter, Greene County, N.Y., Feb. 20, 1819. She died there, or in Catskill, N.Y. shortly after." The author and his family spent several days in the area of Hunter and Catskill searching for records and tombstones, without success. Margaret (Brandow) Wiltse (page 491) of the Catskills was contacted by the author in 1974 for family records there. She said her great-grandfather married as his second wife a (?) Loud. There is a possibility this was Miss Susannah Loud who married after her mother died. In any case Miss Susannah Loud had no children, and she died sometime after she was 44 years old. The birth record and probate record have her name spelled as the author has it here.
