OBITUARY
Death continues to pick some of the best and most desirable citizens for his own, as seems to be the custom. Henry Bosch passed peacefully away at his home at Zutphen last Saturday, after three weeks of intense suffering. He was born in Appeldoorn, Netherlands, June 1, 1843, and came to America with his parents when five years of age. They settled at Vriesland and after the death of his father moved to Holland city and later engaged in mercantile business and operated a stave factory. During Holland's big fire in 1871 all their belongings were consumed by the fire and Mr. Bosch moved back in Vriesland where he conducted a general store for eight years. From Vriesland he moved to a farm in Jamestown Township where he resided until seven years ago when he retired and built a comfortable home on a small parcel of land in the village of Zutphen where he spent the remainder of his days.
The deceased was prominent in both political and religious circles and held many offices of public trust. He was supervisor of Holland city, clerk of Zeeland township eight years, supervisor of Jamestown Township eight years and clerk of Jamestown 6 years in which office he held at the time of his death; besides which he held a number of minor township offices and was secretary of the Farmers' Mutual Fire Insurance Co. of Ottawa and Allegan counties for twelve years. He was a member of the school board 30 years and served his church as deacon and elder for 31 years.
The deceased had hosts of friends; he was one of those plain common citizens who was schooled in honesty and friendship, toned with enough of pioneer hardships in his younger days to add to his useful life. The whole countryside suffers when such men as Mr. Bosch are taken. The sorrow and regret at their passing is not confined to the immediate members of families. The whole citizenship bows its head and brushes away a silent tear.
The deceased is survived by his widow and these seven children: Albert H. Bosch of Georgetown, Mrs. John Van Koevering, Mrs. M. Dekker and John Bosch of Grand Rapids, Charles Bosch of Forest Grove, Henry Bosch Jr., of Moline and Miss Clasina Bosch who fills a position as nurse in the U.B. A. hospital at Grand Rapids. [note:The UBA (United Benevolent Association Hospital, later became Blodgett Hospital.] Besides the above immediate relatives he leaves one sister, Mrs. J. Bouwens, Sr. of this city.
The funeral took place Wednesday afternoon from the home and from the Zutphen Chr. Ref. church. Internment in the Zutphen cemetery.
