Stephen Bon, Sr. after failing health for more than a year, breathed his last at 11:30 o'clock yesterday. His bedside was surrounded by his three sons and one daughter, who are respected citizens.
Stephen Bon was a native of Switzerland and was born in that land of sturdy people Dec. 26, 1826, and was, therefore, past 66 years of age at the time of Ihis death. He married Barbara Christine Rankweiler in Switzerland and soon after came to this country, landing in the city of Cheyenne Nov. 27, 1867.
Cheyenne at that time was a city of tents, but the young man at once opened a shoe shop and by hard work and frugal habits built up a good business. His establishment grew to be one of the largest and best patronized shoe houses in the state.
To Mr. and Mrs. Bon were born five children, three boys and two girls. The eldest daughter. Lizzie, died in 1887 and the faithful wife followed in 1890. These bereavements seemed to break the spirit of the grand old man. For years he has resigned the cares of business, the "Bon Shoe Store" being conducted by Stephen, Jr., and Frank. Charlie is at work in the railroad offices in this city. Katy, the daughter, has been her father's housekeeper ever since the death of the mother.
Mr. Bon was a member of Cheyenne Lodge No. 1, Knights of Pythias, and of the Pioneers' association.
Thus passes away a kindly man and a good citizen. He leaves behind man's best legacy to posterity, that is, stalwart, honest and upright children who will live to do honor to his
memory.
