James was traveling with Orb Pennington from Brookhaven to Silver Creek as they were handling freight for W.M Ross & Bros. of Silver Creek. They had camped out about 3 miles east of Brookhaven on Monticello Rd. It was reported that James was shot and killed in a robbery attempt.
