The son of Bernard Klaas and Angela Langen Antons, Luke was born in Boerger, Germany.

Luke arrived alone in America on 17 Nov 1856, having sailed from Bremmen, Germany on board the "Ocean." He landed in New Orleans with Illinois as his destination.

After arriving in Calhoun County, Luke settled in the Meppen area. His mother had died in Germany, but he was soon joined by a brother, then eventually his father and step-siblings.

Luke served in the Civil War for 20 months before being wounded. After returning to Calhoun, Luke married Mary "Elizabeth" Westerman on 11 Apr 1864 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Brussels, Calhoun County, Illinois. She was the widow of Johan Theodore Holterman.
