Cy married Wilhelmina Emma "Minnie" Simon on 02 Aug 1903 in Calhoun County, Illinois. They were the parents of 9 children. Cy worked doing odd jobs and as a farm laborer in Calhoun County.
Minnie died in 1919 at the age of 34. After her death, Cy and the children continued to live in Calhoun County, Illinois with his mother, Sarah. However, she died in 1923.
While returning from a trip to the grocery store with several family members, Cy was involved in a tragic accident in Highland, Lake County, Indiana. A Grand Trunk train hit the Haynes/Schaefer automobile, and Cy was killed in the wreck, as was his daughter, Ann Schaefer; Ann's husband, Andrew D. "Andy" Schaefer; and 4 of Cy's grandchildren, Earl, Harold, Alby and Marvin Schaefer.
At the time of his death, Cy was 72 years, 7 months and 21 days old. His body was returned to Calhoun County, Illinois for burial at Gueck Cemetery in Batchtown.
