The Otsego Farmer

James W. Saxton

James W. Saxton, a life-long resident of Westville and one of the oldest and most respected citizens of the township, died at 2:30 o'clock Friday afternoon of last week at his home in the town of Middlefield, about two miles from the village. Though he had not been in good health for a long time, his critical illness dates from a fall which he suffered about three months ago.
The funeral services were held at the house at 1 p.m. and at the Westville Methodist Episcopal church at 2 p.m. on Tuesday. His pastor, the Rev. N.B. Ripley, officiated, and interment was made in the Westville Cemetery.
The deceased, who was a son of Simeon N. and Julia (Wilber) Saxton, was born in August, 1835, on the farm which during the while of his long life was his home. He was married October 10, 1858, to Amelia Son of Maryland, who, with nine of their ten children, survives him. They are George Saxton, who resides on the homestead; Mrs. George Cornish of Milford, Mrs. Isaac Russell of Cliffside, Charles L. and Grover W. Saxton of Oneonta, Mrs. Minnie Andrews of Slingerland, Jay Saxton and Mrs. Lucien Bowen of Richfield Springs. He is also survived by thirty-seven grandchildren. Among his grandchildren was Charles L. Saxton, Jr. of Oneonta, one of the first members of Company G to die in service abroad.
Mr. Saxton was from youth a faithful member of the Methodist Episcopal Church at Westville and was for many years a trustee of the church and superintendent of the Sunday School. He was an upright, industrious, highly respected man, and by occupation a farmer. He was a lifelong Democrat and for several terms a justice of the peace of his township He had many friends whose sympathy will be extended to the family in its bereavement. Mr. Saxton was descended from some of the oldest families in New England, one Ancestor being George Saxton, who came from England in 1639 and settled at Westfield, Mass.
