J.D. Dennis

Well known resident of Mayfiled twp. died on Monday (Dec 19) at Granton, Wisconsin. where he has resided for the last eight years with his son Elmer Dennis. He was 85. He is the father of Mrs. Dell Wright and Mrs. Lottie Foster. Remains will be brought to Sycamore with Burial in Elmwood.

Was born in Arcade, N.Y. (Dennis Corners), went west with his father and the family in 1844. He is said to have been short and stocky. He married, in 1852, Mary, Daughter of Joseph and Persilla Holderness. She was born February 23, 1830.
John Dorastus Dennis died December 19, 1910, in Granton, Wisconsin.
Mary Holderness Dennis died March 29, 1892.
Both are buried in the Elmwood Cemetery Sycamore, Illinois.
(Originally buried at the Joiner Cemetery, Mayfield, DeKalb Co., Illinois, later the whole family was moved to the Elmwood Cemetery)

From the genealogy notes of Myrtle Dennis Lundberg: John Dorastus Dennis was the oldest son of Geo. Washington Dennis and he took over his father's land when the father died. He was called Rat or Ras and he was named after his father's brother, Dorastus who lived and died in Washington Co., New York.

Mr. D. J. Dennis was born in the state of New York Sept. 8, 1825, and came to the state of Illinois when he was 18 years of age.

He was married to Mary Holderness Feb. 12, 1850. To this union were born nine children, four of who died in infancy. The other five, who still live to mourn the loss of their father are: Mrs. Phoebe French of Tracy, Minn.; Elmer Dennis of Granton, Wis.; and Mrs. Lottie Sivwright, Mrs. Elizabeth Foster and Mrs. Alice Wright of Sycamore, Ill. Mrs. Dennis died about 19 years ago, and since her death Mr. Dennis has made his home most of the time with his son Elmer, at whose home he died Dec. 19, 1910.

Mr. Dennis and his wife were both members of the M.E. Church. A short funeral service conducted by Rev. G. L. Pound was held at the home, after which the body was taken to the old home at Sycamore, Ill, where another service was held, the remains then being laid to rest by the side of his wife.
