In 1860, he came to White County. He was a teacher. He joined Company K, 20th Indiana Infantry as a private and was promoted to sergeant. He fought in the Battle of Richmond, Kentucky and was discharged in December 1862 for health reasons. He regained his health and in April 1863, he enlisted in Company G, 63rd Indiana Volunteers Infantry. For one year, he served in the Provost Marshal's Office in Indianapolis. In 1864, he was to join his regment at Bull's Gap, Tennessee but typhoid pneumonia prevented him from this. In 1865, he was discharged. For four years, he worked in the White County Clerk's office and for five years, he served a White County recorder in 1874 and re-elected in 1878.
