SHALLOTTE - George Floyd Kirby Jr., 74 of Brierwood, Drive, Shallotte, died Tuesday, June 20, 2006, at his residence following a lengthy illness .. Floyd was born in Brunswick County, NC on January 9, 1932 and was a son of the late George Floyd and Rowena Odom Kirby Sr. He was educated in Edwards Military academy and Shallotte Schools and after graduating from Shallotte High School he attended college at High point College for one year before going into the grocery business with his father at G. W. Kirby & Son Groceries in Supply, NC. At his father's death Floyd opened a grocery store in Shallotte in 1959 and when that store was destroyed by fire he developed Kirby's Shopping Center on the corner of Business 17 and NC 130. In 1970 he opened Kirby's Steak House at the site of the former grocery, which he operated until his retirement in 2004.
Floyd is survived by his wife Jackie Pulley Kirby, of the home, a son, George Floyd "Rusty" Kirby III, of Shallotte, a daughter, Cheryl K. Bellamy and husband, Bill, of Shallotte, a sister, Hilda K. Ingram, of Florence, S C, three grandsons, Kirby & Morgan Bellamy and Chip Kirby, all of Shallotte, and a dear friend, GiGi Smith also of Shallotte
Funeral services will be conducted at 4:00 p.m., Friday, June 23 from The Calvary Baptist Church, Shallotte, by The Rev. Sam Murphy. Entombment will be in Brunswick Memorial Gardens, Shallotte. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m., Thursday, June 22, 2006, at Brunswick Funeral Service, Shallotte and at the residence, 32 Brierwood, Road SW. Pall bearers will be Ronald Hewett, Albert Parker, Rhone Sasser, Roy Trest, Lewis Hartis and Dr. Lee Langston. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to The Calvary Baptist Church Building Fund, 623 Village Road SW, Shallotte, NC 28470.
