ST. GEORGE/CEDAR CITY, UTAH - Kay Melvin Whitehead, age 83, passed away Wednesday, July 8, 2009, in St. George, Utah. He was born September 6, 1925, in Grace, Idaho, to Melvin and Blanche Lindsay Whitehead.
Kay was born in Grace, Idaho, where he was raised and educated. After graduating from high school he attended Utah State University in Logan, Utah; where he was a member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity. There Kay met and married Janet Ogden after which they lived in Grace, Idaho, where two sons, Melvin and David were born. They then moved to the Los Angeles, California area, where Kay worked for the Hughes Aircraft Tool Company as an accountant. The Whitehead family had another addition to the family at this time, a son, Lindsay, was born. In 1957, the family moved to Cedar City, Utah, where Kay and his father, Melvin Whitehead, started the Coca Cola Bottling Company and later the Bald Eagle Beverage Company. Kay and his father bought the Coca Cola Bottling Company on July 12, 1957, 52 years ago this year.

Kay and Janet divorced in 1966. He married Maria Josefine Kieslinger on April 16, 1969, in Las Vegas, Nevada, at The Little Chapel of the West. Kay and Maria resided in St. George. He retired in 1990.

Kay was in the Army Air Force during WWII, as a B-17 Tailgate Gunner in the European Theater.

Kay enjoyed spending time in Beaver Dam, Arizona in his 5th wheel. He was a member of the Elks for 50 years. Kay was an honorable man with great integrity. He was spiritual, respectful, quiet and very honest. Kay was loving to his wife and family.

Surviving family include his wife, Maria Josefine Whitehead of St. George; sons, David Ogden (Cindy) Whitehead of Cedar City, UT, Lindsay Kay Whitehead of Kanarraville, UT; step-daughter, Michaela Miles of St. George, UT; four grandchildren, Kimberly (James) Haskins, CraeLin Whitehead, David Melvin (Shera) Whitehead and Lindsay KayLyle Whitehead. He is preceded in death by a son, Melvin Craig Whitehead and a sister, Nedra Preas.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, July 14, 2009, 11:00 a.m. at the Spilsbury Mortuary Chapel, 110 S. Bluff St., St. George. Friends and family may call Tuesday, from 10:00-10:45 a.m. prior to the services. Graveside services will be held Tuesday, at 1:30 p.m. in the Cedar City Cemetery, Cedar City, UT, with full military honors along with the Elks memorial service.
