John Whittaker Thorpe was the only son born to Thomas and Mary Thorpe, who also had four daughters; Mary, Sarah, Hannah and Elizabeth.

John married Hannah Williams on Sept 18, 1853 in Manchester, England. Together they had fourteen children.

John also married two other women in polygamy, Melina Jane Jones (April 1884) who had four children with John, two boys (Wilford and Horrace) and two girls (Sylvia and Alice) and Mary Alice Walker, a friend from England. Mary Alice and John didn't have children.

Hannah and John also had two daughters that were born and died before the came to Utah.
