MARY ELIZABETH SHIRER
Oldest daughter of Q. A. and Susannah Shirer was born on April 9, 1857, in Adamsville, Muskingum Co., Ohio, and died at her home in Russell on April 14, 1927 at the age of 70 years and 5 days.
Her early life, until her nineteenth year, was spent in Ohio. In the spring of 1876 she moved with her parents to a farm one mile west of Russell, where she lived until 1904 when she, with her father and mother, moved to the home in town. The other children, having established homes of their own, she alone remained at home, the ever ready helper and cheerfull companion of her parents in their old age.
The father passed away in 1907, leaving only she and the mother, until the year 1912, when the beloved mother was also called, leaving her alone in the home where she remained until the time of her death. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Harvey Clarence and Wilbur B. and two sisters, Etta Jane and Mrs. Susannah Zimmer.
She leaves to mourn her loss one sister, Mrs. Alice Watts, of Ogden, Utah, the only one who, on account of sickness, was unable to be present. Also three brothers, Homer A. and John H. of Chariton, Iowa and Charles M., who resides on the farm west of Russell that for so many years was the family home.
She was Aunt Lizzie to twenty-one nieces and nephews, great aunt to twelve and great great aunt to two; besides those she leaves other relatives and a host of friends to miss her.
Early in life she united with the Lutheran church in Adamsville, Ohio, from there transferring her membership to the Lutheran church at Ragtown until 1898, when she became a member of the Presbyterian church of Russell, where for so many years she has been a faithful member.
While she was quiet and unassuming, it will be long before her place will be filled in the Sunday school, the church, the prayer meeting, the Missionary and Aid societies, for to all of these she gave the inspiration of her presence. Only the day before her death she had attended Aid, where she seemed in unusually cheerful spirits. It was from these different church activities that she gained her chief enjoyment in life and was always ready to respond to any of the demands made upon her.
Funeral services were held at the First Presbyterian church of Russell, Iowa, on Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock, conducted by her pastor, Rev. Walter Philip Ransom. Interment was made in the Russell cemetery.
