MRS. SUSANNA SHIRER
Susanna Werts was born Oct. 9th, 1832, in Muskingum county, Ohio, and died in Russell, Iowa, March 2, 1912, aged 79 years, 4 months and 23 days.
She was married to Q. A. Shirer Sept. 6th, 1855, and moved with her husband to Lucas county, Iowa, in 1876 where she lived on a farm west of Russell for 30 years, coming to the town of Russell in 1904, where she lived until the time of her death.
Eight children were born to this union, five boys and three girls, of whom five, Lizzie and Charles of Russell, H. A. Shirer of Chariton, J. H. Shirer of Ridgeway, Mo., and Mrs. Alice Watts of Rosetta, Utah, are left to mourn the loss of a devoted and loving mother. Of the three who preceded their mother in death, Etta Jane died in Ohio, March 10th, 1873, aged 6 months and 4 days; Harvey Clarence died on the farm west of Russell, Jan. 18, 1888, aged 12 years, 4 months and 9 days; Wilber B. died at El Paso, Texas, Jan. 25th, 1905, aged 41 years. Mr. Q. A. Shirer, the father and husband, died July 19, 1907.
Mrs. Shirer became a member of the Lutheran church early in her life at the age of seventeen, back in Ohio, and united with the Presbyterian church in Russell, Iowa, in 1898.
It can be said of her that she was a ripened sheaf gathered for the heavenly garner. She is not, for she has gone to be with her God. Mourn not as those who mourn without hope for she has gone to her reward.
Funeral services were held from the Presbyterian church at 11 o'clock a.m. conducted by the Pastor and the remains were laid to rest in the nearby cemetery in the family plot.
