LAWRENCE -- John Lyle Monaghan, 74, Lawrence, died Saturday, Sept. 17, 1999, at a Lawrence hospital.

He was born May 23, 1925, in Netawaka, to John W. and Dorothy Myers Monaghan. He lived in Topeka before he moved to Lawrence in 1956. He worked for the U.S. Industrial Chemical Co., and later for Koch Industries from 1957 until 1990 when he retired.

He was an Army veteran of World War II.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Lawrence where he served on several committees and was active in the Men's Group. He was a past commander of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 10551 and a member of the Do-Si-Do, Barn Dancers, Merry Mixers and B&J Plus square dance clubs.

He married Dorothy Wolfe May 7, 1949, in Lyndon. She survives.

Other survivors include sons, Ronald Monaghan, Youngstown, Fla., Donald Monaghan, Herndon, Va., Glen Monaghan, Dayton, Ohio, and Richard Monaghan, Eldersburg, Md.; brothers, Carol Monaghan, Holton, Wayne Monaghan, Everest, Dale Monaghan, Topeka, and Daryl Monaghan, Hiawatha; sisters, Maxine Pollom and Eudene Behrnes, both in Ottawa, and Illene Merz, Topeka; and eight grandchildren.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence.

Alford-Clarke Post No. 852 of Veterans of Foreign Wars will conduct graveside services at Memorial Park Cemetery in Lawrence.

Relatives and friends will meet from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at the mortuary.
