JAMES WILSON

James was born to James Wilson and Darcas Newton Wilson. James Wilson's father was mysteriously killed in his bed when James was about 2. He was supposedly a sheriff who was shot and then covered with the quilt, but I have not been able to find him on a list of sheriffs for the county. James and his mother, Darcas, were "out walking" when James' father was shot.Darcas found the body and lost her unborn child right after. James's mother, Darcas, remarried to Samuel Lockard, a year or so later and had 4 more children and then that husband mysteriously disappeared. A decomposed body was found the next spring but it couldn't be identified.

James married Elizabeth Best about 1857. On the 1860 census, the couple were living in Darlington, Beaver, PA, where Elizabeth's family lived. James was a 22 year old laborer. Elizabeth was a 20 year old with a 3 year old daughter, Louisa. There was also a woman named Serepta Lockland living with them. This may have been Darcas Lockard, James' mother, who can't be found anywhere else on the 1860 census.

In the 1870 census, James has moved on to Nelson, Buffalo County, WI and become a farmer. James is 32, "Lisa" is 27, "Sissy" is 11, "Willy" is 6, "Agnes" is 3 and there is an "unnamed" 3 month old female who is the only child born in Wisconsin. James' step brothers and step-sister and mother are also living in Nelson.

In 1880, still a farmer in Nelson, WI, James is 43, Elizabeth is 40, Elmer is 14, Amelia is 13, Esimia (the unnamed baby above) is 10, "Lassing" (William)is 7, Ervon is 4 and Eveline is 2. Louisa has married a Mathieu neighbor.

Twenty years later on the 1900 census, James has sold the farm in Nelson and moved away. He lives in Birchdale township, Todd County, MN and is a 62 year old daylaborer born in May of 1838. Elizabeth is 59, born in May of 1841 and has had ten children, 6 of whom survive. James can read but not write. Elizabeth can read and write.

By 1910, they live in Sedro Wooley, Skagit County, WA. James is a 71 year old laborer, married 32 years. Elizabeth is 69 years old and has had ten children, 5 of whom survive. (These would be Louisa, Elmer, Amelia, Ervon and Essie Mae) All the children moved to Sedro-Woolley except Louisa who lives in SD. An 8 year old grand-daughter, Leslie, lives with James and Elizabeth.

March 28, 1913, Elizabeth died and was buried in Sedro-Woolley. In 1914, a grandson, Melvin, was also buried in James Wilson's plot. On 3 Aug 1917, James N. Wilson died and was buried in Union Cemetery, Sedro-Woolley. The Lemley Funeral Chapel had a record of his death, stating that his funeral was held at the Methodist Church at 2 p.m. with clergyman Phillips officiating. James date of birth was May 26, 1838. The name of his father was James Wilson born in Pennsylvania (In 1840 in Pennsylvania, there are 3 or 4 James Wilsons in Beaver County--two in North Sewickly where the Newtons seem to be congregated (James' wife was a Newton)and his mother's maiden name was Darcas Newton born in Pennsylvania. Interment was at Union Cemetery, Sedro-Woolley.

Son-in-law, Mr. Cluckie was the informant.
