One of the earliest settlers of Kane county, IL, John Whitney came from Massachusetts first to DuPage county in 1833 and then to Kane county in 1835. He purchased 280 acres of land and opened a hotel on the Chicago and Galena route. He married Rachel Ward of Wyoming county, NY on 7 Dec 1826. She died in 1837 leaving two children, Seymour and Alden (b. 1829 m. Charoltte Maria Cowles). John married Maria Blood of Wyoming county, NY on 7 Feb 1839. Their children were Daniel, Rachel C., Mary Ann (b. 1844 m. George A. Downey), John, Maria, Melvin and Charlotte.
