Grandpa Whitney died very suddenly Wednesday, August 14th and was buried Thursday.
Funeral services were preached by Rev. Henderson after which a large concourse of neighbors and friends followed the remains to their lasting resting place in the Belleville cemetery. The bereaved family have the sympathy of the entire community in their hour of affliction.

Obituary.
L.P. Whitney was born in Java, Wyoming county, N.Y., in 1821. He was married to Miss Lydia Vanslyke Jan. 8, 1844. They lived in New York until the spring of 1851, and then removed to McHenry county, Illinois. Mr. Whitney resided there for thirty years. In 1881 he came to Republic county, Kansas, and has made this his home until his death on August 14, 1901, at the advanced age of almost eighty years.
Father Whitney was a man of sterling honesty and integrity. He was a man of more than average ability, and was beloved by all who knew him for his kindness of heart and cheerful, genial disposition. He leaves a wide circle of relatives and friends to love and cherish his memory. Peace be to his ashes.
