Martha Sever joined the Union Forces in 1861 serving as a volunteer nurse in the Union Army. She served for three years before her death of influenza in 1864. Martha Sever was the only woman from Massachusetts to die in service to our country during the Civil War. The Kingston Grand Army Republic Post Number 154, in Kingston, Massachusetts, was named in her honor.
