About 1817, Susannah, her three sisters, parents and other kin relocated to the new state of Mississippi, in Greene County and remained there for the next twenty years. In the 1830s, her father became an active Minister in the Methodist Episcopal church and she and her family relocated to Lauderdale Co., MS, where he became the pastor at the newly founded Mt Pleasant Church in the community of "Whynot".

In 1844, Susannah's mother died, possibly due to complications of the birth of her 18th child, and the unmarried Susannah remained as surrogate mother.

In 1861, the Civil War began and her brothers -- James Thomas, David L, Benjamin, Charles, William and Henry H. -- and her sister Annie Hurst's sons -- James, Phillip & Isaac -- all served in the Mississippi Infantry of the Confederate Army. James Thomas died in a Northern Prison Camp; while those who remained behind lost their homes and possessions.

About 1878, she moved with her widowed brother, William Francis and other family members to Texas.
