About 1846, David married Levicy Kelly in Mississippi.

David's father, Henry, was a Minister in the Methodist Episcopal church and was pastor at the newly founded Mt Pleasant Church in the community of "Whynot" in Lauderdale Co., MS, until his death in 1862.

In 1861, David and his brother, James Thomas, entered the service of the Mississippi State Infantry. In 1862, his brothers -- Benjamin, Charles, William, & Henry H. -- also enlisted and were in the 29th Mississippi Infantry. His siter's (Annie Hurst) sons -- James, Phillip & Isaac -- were in the 37th Mississippi Infantry. James Thomas died in a Northern Prison Camp; while those who remained behind would eventually lose their homes and possessions.

Around 1878, David, Levicy, his brother's widow Nancy, his unmarried sister, Susannah, and brother William Francis and their children moved to Texas.
