Mose "Preacher" Wright is best remembered as the great uncle of Emmett Till, a 14-year old boy from Chicago who was viciously beaten and murdered in Mississippi during the summer of 1955 by two white men for allegedly talking to a white woman. Wright testified in court and publicly identified the defendants, with two simple words "Dar he" (There he is). At that time, Wright assumed great personal risk. His life was threatened but he did not back down. Mose Wright was sixty-four years old and stood about five feet three inches when he bravely pointed his finger straight at the accused J. W. Milam and swore that this was the man who dragged Till out of his cabin the night the boy was murdered. Roy Bryant along with Milam seize young Till for the crime of whistling suggestively at Bryant's wife in a store. Mr Wright testified that Milam left his house with Emmett Till on the night of August 28. After the car drove off with his great-nephew, Mose Wright drove his wife over to Sumner and put her on the train to Chicago for her safety. The next day, Mose Wright drove into nearby Greenwood and told his story to the sheriff. Mose identify the body of Emmett and shared the horrific news with the family in Chicago. Mose "Preacher" Wright, was courageous and he looked the enemy in the eyes. His courage will be remembered.
