Obituary, WATERLOO REGION RECORD, Kitchener, Ontario - Jul. 23, 2009

HORST, Iona May (Meyer) - Passed away peacefully, after a short illness, at St. Mary's Hospital, Kitchener, on July 22, 2009. Iona was born 97 years ago March 7, 1912 in Zurich, Ontario. Beloved wife of the late Lorne Horst who predeceased her April 13, 2001. Loving mother of Dennis Lorne Horst and his wife Arlene of Florida, Marlene May (Horst) and her husband Nathan Gingerich of Baden. Remembered by her daughter-in-law, Nelda Horst of Kitchener. Sadly missed by her grandchildren, Diane (Rob), Darlene (Rick), Darrin (Collette) all of Florida, Cheryl (John), Scott (Colleen), Doug (Bonnie), Bradley (Karen) all of Ontario, Cindy and Jonathan both of Calgary and her 14 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. Iona was predeceased by three brothers, Emmanuel Meyer, Jake Meyer, John Meyer and her sister, Pearl (Meyer) Brock. Fondly remembered by her nieces and nephews. Iona was predeceased by her parents, John and Leah (Gascho) Meyer; son, Douglas John Horst; grandson, Donald Lorne Horst; and granddaughter, Charlotte Elizabeth Kenkel. Iona was a lifelong member at First Mennonite Church in Kitchener where she enjoyed teaching Sunday School, leading girls clubs and WMSA Sewing Circle. She worked at many jobs throughout her life but the one she talked about the most was her job at Smiles and Chuckles Candy Factory. Up until a couple of weeks ago, mother was still entertaining caregivers and visitors with her mouth organ medleys which she was used to doing with her husband Lorne. Iona was also an artist and her paintings of scenery and flowers will be enjoyed by family, for years to come. A book has been compiled of all her paintings and will be on view at the funeral home. To celebrate Iona's life, friends and relatives are invited to the Mark Jutzi Funeral Home , 291 Huron St., New Hamburg on Monday, July 27, 2009 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. The casket will be open at First Mennonite Church, Kitchener from 1 p.m. until the time of the service at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, July 28, 2009. Everyone is invited with Iona's family to join them in the church basement for a time of refreshments and fellowship following the interment in First Mennonite Cemetery. As expressions of sympathy, donations may be made to First Mennonite Church.
