Obituary taken from The Bellville Times, Feb. 27, 1913, page 1.
Ausgust Edward Merten, born August 8th, 1864, died at his home in the Cochran Community on last Thursday, February 20th, being in the forth-ninth year of his age. He was never married, but is survived by an aged mother, two sisters, a number of brothers and other relatives. He was manager of the gin property of Mr. J. F. Granua of Cochran, was a quiet, industrious man who had the confidence and friendship of his acquaintances in fullest measure. Interment was made at Pilgrims Rest Cemetery on Friday, a large concourse of friends being present at the services, which Rev. J. G. Mueller officiated.
