Rebecca Ross arrived in New Orleans on December 15, 1847, with her father Benjamin and her brother William. They came on the barque (ship) "Thames" from Yorkshire, England. They traveled up the Mississippi River to join another sister Ann and her husband William Newton in Perry County, Illinois. The Ross and Newton families are listed in the 1850 census at Perry County. Rebecca became the 2nd wife of James J. Purcell, Jr. They appear in the 1860 and 1870 census at Franklin, Richardson County, Nebraska. At least three daughters were born to them: Melvina, who died in childhood; Mary A., wife of John R. Standerford, and Lucinda, wife of Luther H. Sampson.
