Benjamin Ross arrived in New Orleans on December 15, 1847 on the ship "Thames" from Yorkshire, England. His daughter Rebecca and son William were with him. They traveled up the Mississippi River to join daughter Ann and her husband William Newton in Perry County, Illinois. The families are listed in the 1850 Federal Census and the men are farmers. In 1854, Benjamin Ross was granted ownership to forty acres at Section 15, Township 6-S, Range 2-W, Third Prime Meridian, in Perry County. Although the page is severely watermarked, he can be seen listed in the 1855 Perry County census. At his death, he was survived by son William of the home farm, two married daughters Ann Newton and Rebecca Purcell, and several grandchildren.
Research has found that his wife was Hannah Catton Ross (1784-1844) with whom he had an additional daughter, Mary Ann. Any further relatives in England or Scotland are unknown at this time (2021).
