Spence Guffey, 89, of Athens, died Sunday night, March 26, 2006, at Athens Regional Medical Center.
A native and lifelong resident of McMinn County, he was a son of the late Henry and Lois Underwood Guffey, and was a member of North Athens Baptist Church. He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II and worked at CCC Camp as a foreman and stonemason. He also worked on pipeline, at a saw mill and as a heavy equipment operator, retiring in 1979. He was active at the McMinn Senior Activity Center and was preceded in death by five brothers, Paul, Robert, Warren, Vernon and Jack Guffey; and one sister, Alice Guffey.
Survivors include his wife of 11 years, Minnie McCulley Rogers Guffey of Athens; one stepdaughter and spouse, Phyllis and Tommy Dake of Athens; two stepsons and spouses, Clinton and Pat Rogers of Athens, and the Rev. Mike and Linda Rogers of Mansfield, Ohio; 16 step-grandchildren, Cyndi and Chad Oliver, Chris and Tabitha Rogers, Libby and Jon Sparkman, Shannon and Terry Wilson, Tricia Phillips, Bobby Rogers, Jeff Dake, Shane and Crystal Rogers, Jason and Lilly Rogers and Houston Rogers; 21 step-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Louise King of Cleveland.
Funeral services will be 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in the chapel of Ziegler Funeral Home with the Rev. Bob Kerr officiating. Burial will be 11 a.m. Wednesday in McMinn Memory Gardens with full military honors.
Pallbearers will be Clinton Rogers, Mike Rogers, Tommy Dake, Johnny Guffey, Teddy Guffey and Jerry Guffey.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the McMinn Senior Activity Center, 205 McMinn Ave., Athens, TN 37303.
