Paul Guffey

Paul Guffey, SR. - age 88, of Athens, Tennessee, died late Thursday night at Athens Regional Medical Center. A native of Bakersfield, CA, he had spent most of his life in McMinn County. He was a son of the late Henry and Lois Underwood Guffey and was also preceded in death by a sister, Alice Womack and two brothers, Vernon Guffey and Jack Guffey.

He was a member of East Athens Baptist Church where he served as an Usher for thirty-five years. He was a Butcher at Harrods Thrift Market for fifty-five years until his retirement.

Surviving are his wife, Lillie Leamon Guffey of Athens; son and daughter-in-law, Paul, Jr. and Velda Guffey of Augusta, GA; four daughters and sons-in-law, Wanda and Kenneth Allen of Ten Mile, TN, Sylvia and Walter Gouge, Daris and Norman Anderson and Carlotta and David Mazza, all of Athens, TN; fourteen grandchildren, twenty-two great-grandchildren; sister, Louise King of Cleveland, TN; three brothers, Robert H. Guffey of Baton Rouge, LA, Spence Guffey of Athens, TN and Warren Guffey of Riceville, TN.

Funeral service will be conducted 2:30 p.m. Saturday in The Chapel of Jerry Smith Funeral Home with Rev. Pete Mullins and Rev. Arliss Slack officiating. Burial will follow at McMinn Memory Gardens. The body will lie in state at the funeral home after 11:30 a.m. Saturday where the family will receive friends from 12 noon until 2 p.m. Jerry Smith Funeral Home of Athens is serving the family of Paul Guffey.
