Coy Gardner was born in Bear River City, Utah, the son of Robert Nathaniel Gardner and Florence Ellen Johnson. His childhood and school years were spent there.

On October 25, 1940, he married Yvonne Ruth Patten, the daughter of Lester Lloyd and Ada Peterson Patten. She was born June 20, 1919, in Ogden, Utah, but spent most of her youth in Orcutt, California.

Coy worked as a train dispatcher for the Southern Pacific Railroad for twenty-three years; and the family lived in Nevada, Ogden and Slaterville, Utah, before moving to Millville in 1963. He was then employed by the U.S. Postal Service and worked at Smithfield and Hyrum until his retirement.

After their children were grown, Yvonne obtained her Bachelors and Masters Degrees and taught in Cache County Schools for twenty years, working with children with communicative disorders.

The Gardners have both held many LDS Church positions; Coy has served as Bishop in two wards and has been a member of the Stake High Council.

Yvonne has been involved in Relief Society positions in both ward and stake. Together they served for eighteen months in the Missouri St. Louis Mission.

Their children are: Don E. (Kathy Stauffer), Pamela Ann (Hal Allen), David J. (Dixie Harris), Kathryn M. (Randy Hadfield), Chris (Jana Griffin), Mary Beth (Ben Farrer) and Ruth Joy (Don Wood).
