Witcher enlisted in Boston, Kentucky on September 1, 1862. He was mustered in as a private at Camp Dennison in Co. L, First Tennessee Volunteer Cavalry (U.S.A.) in November 1862. He mustered out on June 5, 1865.

After the war he served as a clerk for W.S. Montgomery and Company. According to the 1880 Census, he had a wife named Virginia M. (37 years old) and a Negro servant (mullato) named Minda Swan (68 years old).
