Obituary

John William Madden was the first of six children that were born to Bert William and Genevra Eleanore Parson Madden. He was born on March 28, 1933, on a farm north of Red Oak, Iowa. As a young boy he lived in the vicinity where his father worked as a farm hand. John attended grade school at a country school near New Market, Iowa. During this time his father got his arm caught in a corn picker. John, being the oldest of the children, assumed the farm chores and learned a lifetime lesson in the value of being a hard worker. John enjoyed school, made lots of friends, and was a good athlete. He played baseball, football, and basketball. He graduated from New Market High School with the Class of 1951.

John had to grow up fast as the nation had entered the Korean War. In July of 1951 he enlisted in the United States Navy. He served on active duty aboard the aircraft carrier the USS Essex until his honorable discharge in July of 1955. During this time, John maintained a courtship with Marlene Hutchinson, whom he had met in high school. Their courtship lasted for 4 years and on June 16, 1957, they were united in marriage at the Methodist Church in New Market. John and Marlene began their lifetime together in Fremont, Nebraska and to this union five children were born: Linda Kay, Nancy Ann, John William, Connie Margene and Debra Sue. John's first full-time job was as a display superintendent for Gambles. He was responsible for setting up new stores and remodeling old stores. He later worked as a store manager for Goodyear in Charles City, Iowa. The best career decision he ever made was relocating to Pella, Iowa. John worked as a mechanic for Ulrich Motor and sold auto parts at Steenhoek Auto for 17 years until his retirement in 1995.

Being honest and helping people was a 'trade mark' of John's career. John and Marlene enjoyed their retirement. They spent the past 14 years wintering in Donna, Texas at Bit-O-Heaven Retirement Park. John enjoyed gardening, camping, spending time with family and friends, and driving the First Baptist Church van for senior citizens. He loved to go to Mexico and would make numerous trips during the winter months. John served as a dedicated school board member on the Pella Community School Board for 9 years. He was a member of the Van Veen-Van Hemert American Legion Post No.89 of Pella and a faithful member of the First Baptist Church in Pella, Iowa.

On July 16, 2009, he passed away at the Comfort House in Pella at the age of 76. Those who will cherish his memory are his wife of 52 years, Marlene; their five children and their spouses and 10 grandchildren. Their families are: Linda Rix of Overland Park, Kansas; Nancy and Lee Inman of Humboldt, Iowa; John and Bonnie Madden, Jr. of Manassas, Virginia; Connie and Bob Grunder of Ankeny, Iowa;Debra and David Newendorp of Urbandale, Iowa. John leaves his siblings and their spouses: Larry and Judy Madden of Atlantic, Iowa, Mary Jane and Karen Lewis of Red Oak, Iowa, Bert and Bev Madden of Carroll, Iowa, Tom and Bonnie Madden of Exira, Iowa; along with many nieces and nephews and the following sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law: Shirley (Hutchison) and Dwight Nook of Lenox, Iowa, Janice (Hutchison) Eugene Shelton of Belton, Missouri.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Bert and Genevra Madden; his parents-in-law, Frank and Marge (Twaddle) Hutchison; a brother, Robert, who died in infancy; and a brother-in-law, Arthur Hutchinson.
