Wendell Leon Gambill, 84 of Sullivan passed away at 12:29 p.m. Sunday, July 19,2009 at the Kindred Hospital in Greenwood.

The 1943 graduate of Sullivan High School was born July 18, 1925 in Sullivan to Cecil Gambill and Bernice Pirtle Gambill.

He was the former manager of Wilkinson Lumber Yard, a member of the First Baptist Church and the Sullivan Housing Authority Board of Directors. Wendell, was a U.S. Army Air Corps Veteran of WWII and a member of the China- Burma-India Hump Pilot Association. He was a past president and member with perfect attendance for sixty-one years of the Sullivan Lions Club and was awarded the Melvin Jones Fellow Award by Lions International. He was a former member of the Indiana Tuberculosis Association Board of Directors, the Sullivan County Jaycees where he received the Distinguished Service Award and the Sullivan City Council. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers Sylvan Gambill, Ervin Gambill and Harold Gambill and three sisters Evelyn Fisk, Mildred Pirtle and Wilma Thornberry.

Survivors include his wife of sixty-two years Mary Laverne Dietz Gambill of Sullivan whom he married July 20, 1947, two sons Ted (Rosemary) Gambill, Chapel Hill, NC and Gary Gambill, Jacksonville, FL, one daughter Alice (Ronnie) Shorter, Sullivan, his step mother Maurine Gambill, Sullivan, seven grandchildren, Vince Gambill, Jason Gambill, Jill Gambill, Jamie Gambill, Lindsey Gambill, April Shorter Childress, and Lt. Kyle Shorter, two great grandchildren Cheyten Hernandez-Gambill and Kai Hernandez- Gambill and other relatives.

Services will be at 10:00 a.m. Thursday at the Holmes Memorial Chapel with Rev. Timothy Fleace officiating.

Burial with military graveside rites by the Sullivan, Shelburn and Hymera American Legions and the Sullivan Veterans of Foreign Wars will be in the Center Ridge Cemetery.
Visitation is 4-8:00 p.m. Wednesday.

Pallbearers will be Ronnie Shorter, Lt. Kyle Shorter, Jason Childress, Robert Street, Bob Hendrix, Don Hunt, Vince Gambill, Steve Fisk and Bob Dyer.

Those who wish may make donations to the American Cancer Society or the Sullivan Lions Club.
