S/O John Norwood b. Jan 2, 1760 in Baltimore, MD. & Mary Haile b. Sep 13, 1763 in England

Married Mary Ann Rooker on Jul 12, 1812 in Blount Co., TN.

They had 10 Children - John Wesley, Lorenzo Elliott, William George Washington, Newton Nicholas, Lucinda, Ann Maria, Louisa Jane, Nancy E., Elbert Franklin & an infant Son who died on Aug 28, 1833/

George W. Norwood was born into the large family of John and Mary Norwood. He began farming in Tennessee (his family moved there in 1789) but later moved to Indiana.

He married Mary Ann Rooker on 7/21/1812 in Knoxville, Blount Co. TN. In 1819 they moved to Wayne Co. IN where the town of Milton now stands, and on 3/22/1822 moved to Indianapolis, then consisting of a few log cabins.

George was by trade a wagon maker. His first shop was located on West Maryland Street and the next one on the southeast corner of State House Square. He had leased these eight acres for pasture and garden and his cabin was about where the south wing of the State House now stands. When this ground was needed for the new State House, he gave up his lease for $300, buying the ground where the William H. Block store now stands for $300 "and a rip". He later bought the NE corner of Illinois and Washington Streets for $300 and built his wagon shop there.

George was elected councilman several times. He was elected City Treasurer in 1846 and in 1850 he retired from active life, enjoying excellent health until a period just prior to death which occurred in the home of his grandson, John L. Norwood (b. 1847).

He was a member of the first Board of Trustees of Meridian Street Church and his wife was a charter member of that church. Both he and his wife are buried at Crown Hill Cemetery.
