St. Lucas, Jan. 14.--John Franzen of St. Lucas died Sunday morning, Jan. 9, at 9:30, at the age of fifty-three years.
Not until about the beginning of December, when Mr. Franzen became seriously ill, did the people of this community know that he was ailing, and it was shortly thereafter that he went to the hospital at New Hampton for aid. There with the best of care his strength was improved so that a more thorough examination could be made, and it was found that he was suffering from a serious cancer, and that he would live but a short while.
Several days before his death he (was) brought home to his farm so he could be with his family during the few last days of his life.
He is survived by his wife and nine children--Bob, Joe, Leo, Mary, Hugo, Clara, Jerome, John, and Anna; and his brothers Frank of Ionia, Iowa, Joe, and two sisters, Mrs. Christ Schwammen and Mrs. John Schwammen, of St. Lucas.
The funeral service with a requiem mass was held at St. Luke's church Wednesday at 10 o'clock and the burial was in St. Luke's cemetery.
