Sarah Lavinia Walker Hughes was born Sept. 12, 1858, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to George Gorril Walker and Mary Hopkin Walker. She was the youngest of 9 children. Her parents were converted to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in England, and in 1850, they left their home and came to the United States. After arriving in the U.S. they crossed the plains with the Mormon pioneers by wagon train to get to the Salt Lake Valley.

In 1864, when Sarah was 6 years old, her family moved to Mendon. When she was 12 years old, her family moved to Centerville, Utah, for about 2 years before returning to Mendon, where they finally settled.

In 1876, Sarah was chosen as one of the first Mendon May Day queens. It was in Mendon that she met her husband, Charles Hughes. They were married in the Salt Lake Endowment House on Dec. 12, 1878.

Seven children were born to them:
1) Mary Ann Hughes (M.D.) Bird (1879-1964)
2) Charles Walker Hughes (1881-1935)
3) Lavinia "Lou" Hughes (A.N.) Sorenson (1884-1920)
4) Henry "Gorril" Hughes (1886-1943)
5) Edith Hughes (David) Winn (1889-1974)
6) John Owen Hughes (1893-1973)
7) Gladys Hughes (Wesley) Nelson (1895-1975)

Shortly after Sarah and Charles had their first child, they moved to Swan Lake, Idaho, where Charles worked for the railroad. They lived there for a couple of years before returning to Mendon. Upon their return, Charles built their home on 321 North Main Street.

Sarah was a devoted member of the LDS Church and was a good example to her family. She served in various capacities in the church, including counselor in the first MIA presidency in Mendon and visiting teacher. She also served as a chaplain to the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers in Mendon for several years.

During World War I, while her son, Gorril, was serving in the U.S. Army, she knitted articles of clothing to send to the soldiers. She was one of the first to join the American Leion Ladies Auxiliary and acted as chaplain of that organization until the age of 75.

In 1920, her daughter, Lavinia, died of brain cancer at the age of 36, and Sarah took her grandson, Wendell Sorenson, into her home and raised him until Lavinia's husband remarried.

Sarah had poor eyesight in her older years, but her home was so well organized that she could find anything she needed. She passed away on April 19, 1944, at the age of 85, at the family home in Mendon.
